Dorothy Mae Heuslein, (May 21, 1923-October 16, 2023), passed away peacefully at St. George Village, Roswell, GA, where she’d lived for the past 13 years.
She is predeceased by her husband, William “Bill” Heuslein and son, Frank Eugene. She will be missed greatly by her daughters: Lisa Heuslein Valence and Linda Heuslein Spudic, and her son-in-law, Tom Spudic. She leaves behind four grandchildren: Lisa Spudic Cusano (Diego), Michael Spudic (Lindsay), Julie Valence Merchant (Jimmy), and Katie Valence Reine (Ted Jr). She is also survived by great-grandchildren Nicolas, Sebastian, Benjamin, Delaney, Ted III, and Stevie Lynn.
Dorothy “Dottie” Heuslein was born on Long Island and was the second oldest of 12 children. She fondly recalled her Swiss grandmother, “Grandmère,” who was one of the biggest influences in her life. Grandmère was an avid gardener, and Dottie, too, was devoted to her gardens in Cold Spring Harbor, NY, Ramona, CA, and at St. George Village, where she was known for her tomatoes, lettuce, marigolds, and six-foot sunflowers.
A loving wife to the late William A. Heuslein for 68 years, and mother of three: Linda Spudic of Roswell and Lisa Valence (Steve) of Westwego, LA. Her son, Frank Eugene passed away at age 19. Frank was physically challenged in the days before ADA assistance but was loved and cared for by his devoted parents.
Dottie also volunteered in Sunday School, Girl Scouts, tutoring second graders, and with the Red Cross thrift store and blood mobile over the years. Dottie also loved to play golf and to travel.
Living over 100 years, Dottie kept busy not only with her garden but playing bridge, Rummi-Kub, knitting, crafting and reading biographies and history. She kept a sunny disposition and always tried to bring a little cheer to her neighbors with flowers from her garden or Christmas greenery bouquets.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at St. George Village and Agape Hospice Care for taking such loving care of Dorothy.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to her church- Northbrook United Methodist Church, 885 Woodstock Road, Suite 430-380, 30075-2274.
