August Raymond Van Cantfort, 87, better known as “Van”, of Columbus, Ga., passed away on May 8, 2017,after a brief illness. The funeral service will be held at 11am on Monday, May 22 at Christ The King Catholic Church in Pine Mountain, Ga. Burial will follow at a later date in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga. Van was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 8, 1929. He was a proud alumnus of Cathedral Latin High School and also attended Miami University of Ohio. Van was married to Ellen Myer. Ellen passed away in February of 1996. Van later married Judy Gaulden who passed away in October of 2016. Mr. Van Cantfort served his country honorably as a member of the USMC during the Korean conflict. Van worked in radio and TV for over 50 years. He was a leader in the broadcast industry. Van was a founding member of the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE). He worked12 years at WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, Va. and 25 years with WSB-TV in Atlanta. He enjoyed playing tennis and telling a good story. Van was also actively involved in the Roman Catholic Church. Van is survived by two children, Terry Pearson (Tommy) of Virginia Beach, Va. and Dale Van Cantfort (Tara) of Clarkesville, Ga. He also is survived by five loving grandchildren and nine adoring great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Christ The King Building Fund, P.O. Box 899 Pine Mountain, Georgia 31822.
