Joseph Julius McGowan

Joseph Julius McGowan, aka “Blaise,” passed away peacefully at home in Grover Beach on July 23, 2026, at the age of 83, with his loving wife of 49 years, Arlene, by his side.

In addition to his wife, Arlene, Blaise will be loved and remembered by his daughter, Erin McGowan; his sister-in-law, Marianne Lydon; many nieces and nephews, including Susan, who considered their home her second home; and many friends on both the East and West Coasts. He was affectionately known as “Rambo” to Ellie McGowan Manuel (Bob) and as “California Joe” to Keenan, Kiyah, Danica, Ronan, and Brynn Manuel.

Blaise was predeceased by his parents, William and Julia (née Ronan) McGowan; his aunt, Anne McGowan, and sister, Peggy Rogozinski, who raised him after the tragic death of his mother; sisters Nancy Keating and Franny Battle; and brother Billy McGowan. We know he is happy to have finally met his mother in heaven and to be reunited with so many dear friends and family members.

After returning from service in the Vietnam war, Blaise worked for a number of years as a bartender. He was lucky enough to meet both his wives at the Liberty Tavern in Woodlyn. He also worked as an electrician for 58 years, often in nuclear plants. From his descriptions of that time, he and his crew must have been the models for Homer Simpson. After visiting California and the Pacific Northwest, Blaise knew he had found the place he wanted to call home and moved with Arlene to the Golden State. He enjoyed golf, boating, reading, traveling, Eagles football, and the carrot cake from Taco Temple.

Blaise wanted to be remembered for his humor and for keeping everyone on their toes. He did not want a formal service that you had to attend, when he couldn’t be the LIFE of the party.
