Our beloved Bill, formerly of Denver, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025 surrounded by members of his family. The fourth of five children, Bill was born on August 29, 1950 to James R. Lewis and Martha Lewis (See) in Denver, Colorado. He graduated from Cherry Creek High School in 1968 and attended the University of Denver majoring in music. In order to further his musical career, Bill left Colorado and moved to Boston and later to New York City. His “music room” in New York City attracted singers of all levels eager to study with him. Bill welcomed them all.
Bill performed for over 55 years as a professional musician, pianist, accompanist, singer and arranger. He also served as a vocal coach for the Santa Fe Opera, Lake George Opera Festival, Opera Omaha, Texas Opera Theatre, Central City Opera House Festival and Natchez Opera Festival. As a teacher Bill served on the faculties of both the Boston and New England Conservatories and at Rutgers University. He taught masters classes across the U.S. and most recently as Artist in Residence at the University of Kentucky with Dr. Ronan Tynan.
Bill regularly appeared for 25 years with his musical partner, the renowned Irish tenor Dr. Tynan, in concert and played for Marcello Giordani, mezzo-soprano Miss Victoria Livengold and Irish violinist Mr. Gregory Harrington. He performed throughout the U.S., Canada, Iceland, Brazil, Germany, Sicily, the British Isles and China. He can be heard on countless CDs with different artists, ranging from opera to popular music.
Bill is survived by his siblings, Charlene, Jim, Judy and Dinah and numerous adoring nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Bill embraced us all with his generous joyful nature, easy smile, sharp wit, kindness and twinkling eyes. He lived a life of purpose, passion and grace; always giving more than he ever asked in return. Those who performed with Bill remember him as a brilliant pianist whose artistry moved audiences around the world. His hands didn't just play notes; they told stories, lifted hearts and filled quiet rooms with light. He will be terribly missed. Arrangements to celebrate Bill's life are pending.
