He grew up in Rockaway & Chatham, NJ, and Longmeadow, MA. He graduated as Battalion Commander from Carson Long Institute, New Bloomfield, PA, and attended Springfield Community College before being drafted into the Army in the summer of 1969.
He served two tours in Viet Nam and received a Bronze Star, Viet Nam Cross of Gallantry, and other commendations for valor. He was stationed in Germany, Korea, Ft. Knox, KY, Ft. Riley, KS & Schofield Barracks, HI, before attending the US Army Sgt. Major Academy in El Paso, TX. He served as Command Sergeant Major at Fort Carson, CO, from 1986-1990 and retired after 23 years of military service in the U.S. Army.
He lived in Colorado Springs and worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1991 until his death on, October 25, 2019.
He is survived by his sister, Linda Sue Meagher (Charles), Cumming, GA, and brother, Robert B. Thompson (Kathy), Deerfield, MA, nieces and nephews, and several cousins. He was interred with full military honors at Pikes Peak National Cemetery in Colorado Springs on December 9, 2019.
