Stephen “Steve” Corman, 84, passed peacefully on June 2, 2026 surrounded by his family. Born and raised in the Chicago area, he attended Highland Park High School and the University of Denver. He married his beloved wife Sheila in 1967 and together they raised two children, Lisa and Neil.
Steve was an eight-time Emmy-award winning television news and sports producer / writer. He worked in broadcast journalism for nearly 50 years, working at WMAQ-TV (NBC Chicago), KNSD-TV (NBC San Diego) and WIND Radio (Group W-Chicago) in various producing, writing and management positions. In 2000 he was inducted into the San Diego/Southwestern Area Silver Circle in recognition of his contributions to the industry.
He loved giving back to those looking at careers in journalism by teaching courses in broadcast journalism over the years in Chicago and San Diego. This included four years as a department head at Columbia College in Chicago. He cherished spending the time with students and mentored many who went on to have successful careers in the same field.
While Steve enjoyed wearing colorful socks, his favorites were the “Pale Hose” (Chicago White Sox): a dedicated fan of them his entire life. So dedicated was he to his beloved Sox, that on his wedding day when the Sox played a doubleheader a friend monitoring the games with a transistor radio and single ear bud provided him with occasional score updates during the wedding reception. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the team and baseball in general. He was a fan of many sports and teams including his beloved DU Pios, Chicago Bears and Blackhawks. He loved summer afternoons at the racetrack watching and betting on the “ponies”.
Even after he retired, he continued to write and authored two books. “Danny’s Decades” in 2011 and “Chicago’s Sweetest ‘16: A Baseball Fantasy” in 2015.
Known for both his charisma and acerbic wit, Steve was comfortable being center stage. He often spent what felt like hours regaling people with stories of both his children’s successes and, whenever possible, anything that would embarrass them.
Steve is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sheila; his children, Lisa (Paul Roberts) and Neil (Shira Weinberg); and his granddaughter Hannah. He was preceded in death by his parents, Abraham and Gladys Corman.
A celebration of life will be held later this summer.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the University of Denver in support of the Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies Fund in Steve’s memory.
