Robert K. Bowie of Mead, Colorado passed away on June 8, 2019 at 76 years of age. Bob was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming on September 13, 1942, graduated from Cheyenne High School, then went to school for electronics. He enlisted in the United States Air Force where he spent eight years stationed abroad and in the United States during the Vietnam War.
After he left the service, he moved with his wife Karen to the Bar-K Ranch above Jamestown, Colorado where they built a log home, owned several horses and dogs and had their daughter Heather. His time in the military gave him his career in weather radar systems, working at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and Colorado State University (CSU) where he participated in many projects, both on land and at sea, throughout the world. These project sponsors included National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and other foreign and domestic scientific agencies and universities. Bob retired at the age of 71 from CSU.
After retirement he kept up with the US political news and enjoyed spending time with family, friends and his cat Puts. Bob took part in expanding the CD-5 Fire Department in Jamestown in early 1970, which later became Lefthand Fire Protection District (LHFPD). He served as a Battalion Commander for a time, and Communications Officer. During his time with the fire department he fought many local forest fires throughout the region. He also was a member of the LHFPD sent to help fight the Yellowstone fire in 1988. In everything Bob did, he worked hard and received a great deal of accolades from people he worked alongside (much to his embarrassment).
Bob is survived by his wife of 56 years Karen, daughter Heather Bowie, grandson Anakin Bowie Sekich, brother-in-law Dave Guille, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Bob and Ruby Bowie, Mary Ann Guille, and niece Ruby Guille.
A celebration of Bob`s life will be held at a later date. The family is asking in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in his honor at support.woundedwarriorproject.org
