Philip Martin Kleinsmith passed away peacefully, with family members at his side, the afternoon of Wednesday, June 20, 2018. Phil enjoyed a long, fulfilling life in which he led a successful Colorado Springs law firm for four decades, travelled the world, and burned through highway miles as he searched out the most remote corners of North America. From the Alaska Wilderness to the Canadian Rockies, Glacier National Park, the Prince of Wales Hotel, Yellowstone, Isle Royale, and any scenic view in between, there wasn’t much of this land that Phil didn’t explore. A lifelong learner, an avid golfer, a discerning political observer and a man who believed that experience is the best teacher, Phil enjoyed a campfire coupled with good conversation amongst friends and family. He will be truly missed.
Phil was born in Detroit, Michigan, on August 16, 1939. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Dearborn, Michigan, in 1957 and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit in 1961. Phil moved to Denver, CO, where he received his law degree from the University of Denver in 1967.
Phil is survived by his wife of 22 years, Margaret, his sisters Mary Anne and Cathy, his daughter Julie Beauseau, his son Mark, Margaret’s children Rich, Nicole and Sean, 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations on Phil’s behalf to the American Diabetes Association.
