Paul Robert Kennedy, age 78, passed away peacefully in Colorado surrounded by family on May 28, 2018. Paul was married for 52 years to the love of his life, Patricia (Oberembt) Kennedy. Paul was a genuine, peaceful, kind, and generous man who deeply loved and cared for family and friends. Paul is the son of the late Thomas Joseph and Lucy (Curtis) Kennedy and was born in Jessup, PA. Paul graduated with honors from the University of Scranton in 1961 and earned his PhD in Psychology with honors in 1973 from Loyola University.
Paul spent more than 45 years in his beloved profession of Clinical Psychology and loved helping others. He was so easy to talk to which made him great at his chosen path. He worked as a Clinical Psychologist for the City of Chicago for more than 30 years and for the McGrath Clinic. He was still in his private practice at the beginning of 2018. He had close relationships to his patients and was always trying to help. He served five years on the State of Illinois Psychologist Examining Committee.
Paul loved Notre Dame sports with a passion. As a long time Notre Dame football and basketball season ticket holder, many of his most enjoyable times were spent with Pat, friends, and family enjoying Notre Dame sports. He lived life to the fullest, he and Pat enjoyed traveling and going to Door County every year, as well as attending the Chicago Symphony, Opera, and Goodman Theater with family and friends. He enjoyed showing off his city of Chicago to all who visited. Every month Paul would head downtown by train with Pat to get his hair cut, go shopping and enjoy happy hour and dinner. Paul was a connoisseur of food. He always was thinking of the best restaurant to enjoy amazing meals together with friends. He was very involved with St. Barnabas Church in Beverly, serving as a lector for many years.
Paul is survived by his wife Pat and his daughter Suzanne (Suzie) Robinson and her husband Warren Robinson. Warren and Suzie have been integral in caring for Pat and Paul for years and have been incredible in making Paul’s care and recovery from cancer and other illnesses as good as it could be. Paul was preceded in his death by his son, Mark, and his brother Tom. Paul was very close to his cousin Jack Curtis. There are numerous friends as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren, that have loved Paul and been such an important part of his life.
There will be a visitation with family and friends at St. Barnabas Catholic Church (10134 S Longwood Dr, Chicago, IL 60643) on Saturday, June 9th, at 1pm. A funeral service will be held at 2pm officiated by Father Donavan. Interment to be at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery at 2755 West 111th St, in Chicago, IL.
