Lyle Tay Naish Sr., the only child of Darrell A. Naish and Ethel R. Bayers, was born in Juneau, Alaska on August 18, 1942. He was a great grandson of Reverend Father Ivan Soboloff, an early Russian Orthodox priest in Sitka and Killisnoo, Alaska.
Lyle's first few years were spent in Juneau, Alaska. His parents moved to Washington State where he attended various schools. He graduated from Mark Morris High School, Longview, Washington, in 1960. During his teen years he was a member of The Sea Scouts. After graduation, he returned to Alaska and attended the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.
Lyle was a member of the Alaska National Guard from 1960 to 1964. He went in as a Private and after his many advancements, went on to Officers' Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Before going on active duty, he married his "college sweetheart", Charla Foster. Shortly after their marriage they became members of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints. Later in life he served as a Bishop at Ft. Lewis, Washington and then again at Cave Junction, Oregon.
Leaving Alaska in 1965, Lyle went on active duty to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Shortly thereafter he was sent to Vietnam for two years. For the next several years he and his family moved from post to post. One of his favorite assignments was to RAF Bicester, England, where he was an exchange officer with the Royal British Army. There he had the privilege of attending various ceremonies for the Queen of England. Also while there, he and his family had the opportunity to visit Russia, land of his ancestors.
Lyle received his Bachelor's Degree at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and two Master's Degrees at American University in Washington D.C. Throughout his (almost) 25 years serving in the Army, he received countless awards and citations. While living in San Diego, he helped promote the Sgt. York missile. At a ceremony for the roll-out of the "Sgt. York", he had the honor of escorting Mrs. York; and what a privilege that was.
Lyle retired at the rank of Lt. Colonel after climbing the ladder from a Private. Upon retiring from the Army he worked at General Dynamics, Qual Com, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Washington and Alaska. After his professional career he became a student at ITT Technical Institute and upon graduation, he was asked to return as an instructor.
Lyle enjoyed reading the scriptures; and his favorite book was Jesus The Christ. He also enjoyed wood working, reading, keeping in touch with friends, and John Wayne movies.
Lyle and Charla would have celebrated their 55th anniversary on May 20th, 2019.
