Leo Edward Weins

Leo was born on April 18, 1942, in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Ed and Lillian Weins. He grew up alongside three brothers and one sister and carried many fond memories of his South Dakota years with him throughout his life.

A homebuilder and carpenter by trade, Leo worked alongside his father and brothers, developing skills that would become an important part of his life and career. He took great pride in working with his hands and in the homes and projects he helped create.

In his younger years, Leo loved camping and fishing with his family in South Dakota. Some of his favorite memories were the simple ones—taking his family to his mom and dad’s house for homemade ice cream and gathering together for holidays and special occasions.

Leo was also an avid fast-pitch softball player for many years and was known to be quite a player. Those were days he treasured, and the stories and memories stayed close to his heart throughout his life.

Above all, Leo dearly loved his family. He was the proud father of one daughter and two sons, who blessed him with eight grandchildren and, eventually, 15 great-grandchildren.

Leo moved to Colorado in 1987, where he met Mary, the woman who would become his wife and companion for more than three decades. Leo and Mary married in 1991, and with Mary’s two daughters and two granddaughters, his family grew even larger. His blended family became an important part of the life they shared together.

Leo loved gardening and being outdoors. From spring through fall, one of his favorite places was the front deck, where he could be found nearly every day enjoying a cup of coffee. He always said coffee simply tasted better outside than it did inside.

And, if something was happening in the neighborhood, chances are Leo knew about it. He proudly served as the unofficial “neighborhood watchdog” and seemed to know every car and truck that traveled up and down the street. It was simply part of who Leo was—observant, interested in what was happening around him, and always keeping an eye on things.

Leo was preceded in death by his first wife, Darlene, with whom he had three children; his parents, Ed and Lillian Weins; and his brother, John.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; daughter Deb Wagner (Kenny); sons Scott (Angela) and Troy (Margo); stepdaughters Jeanette Payne (Leon) and Julie Grimes (Santos Morales); his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brothers Peter (Marlys) and Paul; his sister Sharon (Roger); and many other family members and loved ones.

Leo leaves behind a lifetime of memories—the homes he helped build, the family gatherings, fishing and camping trips, softball games, gardens he tended, mornings spent drinking coffee outside, and the countless ordinary moments that, in the end, become the ones we treasure most.

He was deeply loved, and he will be greatly missed.
