Lawrence “Larry” J. Franca, of Thornton, CO, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2024, at the age of 75. Born in Denver, CO, Larry lived a full and vibrant life, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and an unmatched love for life’s adventures.
Preceded in death by his beloved parents, Ernest R. and Claire A. Franca, Larry carried with him their values of hard work and integrity throughout his 40-year career as an educator and 50-plus years as an athletic trainer. He was a fixture in the world of sports, not just locally but globally, as his passion for athletic training took him to every corner of the world. Whether he was coaching on a high school field in Jefferson County or collaborating with professional sports organizations, Larry was a mentor and friend to countless athletes, coaches, and students alike. If you were lucky enough to be on the receiving end of his advice—whether about life or sports—you knew you were in good hands.
His dedication to education, both inside the classroom and on the sidelines, left an indelible mark on the communities he served, particularly at Regis University Athletics and throughout high school programs in Jefferson County. Larry was the kind of teacher who didn’t just teach lessons—he lived them, instilling values of perseverance, respect, and, of course, the importance of a good stretch before any game.
At home, Larry was the definition of family man. He shared 54 wonderful years of marriage with his loving wife, Dyanne, and together they built a family filled with love and laughter. He was a devoted father to Shelley (Michael), Adam (Rachel), and Brian (Brandi). His grandchildren—Addison (Samuel), Lillianna, Dominic, Berry, Sophia, and Penelope—were his pride and joy. Larry was the kind of grandfather who attended every recital, game, and school event he could, offering a firm handshake and an encouraging word.
Though Larry has left the field, his legacy of compassion, humor, and unyielding dedication to others will live on. He was a man who saw the beauty in every challenge and never let life’s obstacles stop him from smiling—whether it was during a family barbecue or while taping up an ankle on the sidelines. His was a life well-lived, full of moments that made others better simply for knowing him. And as Larry would say, “Keep moving forward—life’s just one big game, and you’re the MVP.”
A funeral service will be held on November 8, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 900 W Midway Blvd, Broomfield, CO 80020, with a Reception to follow. Eulogy will begin 10 minutes prior to Mass.
