It is with heavy hearts and endless fond memories that we announce the passing of Jerry Alexander Schafer, who left this world on January 4th, 2025 at the age of 74 after a painful battle with cancer. A devoted husband, father, and friend, Jerry was known for his unwavering love for his family, his sense of humor, and his incredible ability to lend a hand to anyone in need.
Born in Denver, then raised in the Wheatridge area, Jerry had a spirited and ornery streak as a child, always ready to use his love of running from the sound of trouble! His love for sports was evident from a young age, where he excelled especially in baseball, football and wrestling, strengthening his competitive nature and determination. After high school, Jerry proudly served in the U.S. Navy, where he learned the value of discipline and a little more tolerance for authority. His military service shaped him into a man of resilience and he carried lessons, friendships and a sense of adventure with him throughout his life.
Upon completing his time in the Navy, Jerry attended the University of Northern Colorado, where a classmate sitting next to him in health class turned out to be Kathy Hanley, the love of his life. The two married and spent 51 wonderful years together, building a family of 4 kids and a legacy of love, laughter, and support. Throughout his life, Jerry was an airplane enthusiast, Ford fanatic and loud music lover. Baseball/Softball was a lifelong joy for him as player, coach and eventually loyal fan watching his grandkids. Softball was a constant bright spot for him and a source of many dear friendships even into his seventies - the senior league kept him out on the ballfield and tailgating thereafter. His love for helping others extended beyond his family, as he was always willing to help, whether it was a home project, a car repair, or simply being there for his neighbors, friends and even strangers stranded on the side of the road in non-Ford vehicles. He leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and service to those who knew him. Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Kathy, his children, Jerry Jr., Amy, John & Sarah, 6 grandchildren, and countless friends and extended family members.
A funeral service will be held on January 30th, 2025 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church at 10:30am with a Luncheon reception to follow, then a burial ceremony at Ft. Logan National Cemetery at 2:30pm. All are welcome to join for all or part of the services as you are able.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to Tunnel to Towers Foundation https://t2t.org/ to aid in the support of fallen and injured first responders and veterans.
