If heaven has a golf course, there’s a good chance Jay Michael “Mick” Finnell is already lining up his first tee shot — with perfect form, of course. Mick, 82, of Denver, Colorado, passed away peacefully on April 21st, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, loyalty, and a fierce love for family and fairways.
Born in Denver on September 30th, 1942, Mick spent his life rooted in the place he loved most. He built a career in medium voltage procurement at Xcel Energy — a job title that sounded complicated enough that most of us just nodded and said, "Wow, sounds important." And it was. Because whether at work, at home, or on the golf course, Mick showed up every day with integrity, humor, and a stubborn determination to do things right.
On October 19th, 1979, Mick married the love of his life, Judith Elaine Finnell, proving that the best things in life are worth waiting for. Together, they created a blended family that overflowed with love: Vicki Conant, Cindy Lancaster, Mike Finnell (Sarah), and stepchildren Denise Vander Ploeg (Ron), Mike Kosters (Caron), Kim Bylsma (Tim), and Kevin Kosters (Ashley). Mick also leaves behind several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who no doubt inherited his competitive spirit and his knack for making every gathering a little more fun.
Mick’s passions were many, but sports, especially golf — were close to his heart. He approached the game the way he approached life: with patience, skill, and just the right amount of good-natured trash talk.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Ludie Finnell and Jay Marvin Finnell, as well as his brothers, Ron and Bob Finnell.
A service celebrating Mick’s life will be held on May 4th, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Hope Fellowship Church, 2400 S. Ash St., Denver, Colorado.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort knowing Mick’s story continues — in every well-told joke, every perfectly hit drive, and every memory we hold dear. He lived well, he loved deeply, and he will be missed beyond words.
