Jana Knevel Vente, born on August 17, 1928, in Ermelo, Netherlands, was a woman who lived a life rich in faith, love, and devotion to her family and community. She was born into a large family of 11 siblings. Her childhood was filled with the joyful noise of siblings and a strong bond with her father. Jana was a determined and strong-willed young girl, always quick to tackle her tasks so that she could enjoy time playing with her brothers and sisters. Even at a young age, she was known for her firm opinions and a natural leadership quality.
As a teenager, Jana witnessed the harsh realities of war, including the presence of patrolling Nazi soldiers on the streets of her hometown. Despite the challenges of the time, she cherished her youth and the moments spent with her friends.
Jana's journey into adulthood took a life-changing turn when she met Jack Vente, a young man from Rotterdam, a friend of sister Bea’s fiance. After only one date Jack entered the Netherlands Army in Indonesia. They fell in love through writing letters for four years. They married on March 26, 1952, shortly after his tour ended. The couple's adventurous spirit led them to emigrate to Canada in May, soon after their marriage, aboard the Ryndam ship from Rotterdam to Halifax. They settled in Peterborough, Ontario, in a modest upstairs apartment, where Jana worked cleaning houses and learning English. Their early years in Canada also included working on a farm, solidifying their strong work ethic and resilience.
In the 1960s, Jack and Jana moved to the Chicago area, where they became houseparents at Elim Christian School. Their caring nature and love for children were evident in this role, which they held for several years. After moving to a house, Jana spent time working in a hospital.
By the early 1970s, they had relocated to Los Angeles, where Jana's brother Harm and his family lived. They found a home on Eagle Peak in Canyon Country, where their house became a gathering place for family and friends. During this time, Jana pursued her passion for nursing, earning her LPN license. Her practical nature earned her the title of "most practical" during her graduation ceremony. She worked for many years as an ER nurse and held various other positions at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, CA.
Jana's faith was at the center of her life. She was a dedicated member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sun Valley, where she contributed as a Sunday School teacher, a leader of the GEMS Girls' Club, and the coordinator of the Golden Agers Group. Her commitment to serving others was a hallmark of her character.
In the late 1980s, Jack and Jana moved to a condo on Rainbow Glen in Newhall, CA, where they built lasting friendships with their neighbors. During their time at both Eagle Peak and Rainbow Glen, the Ventes created many cherished memories, many including relationships with the Klaasen and Den Braber Families. Traveling in their camping van and camper gave them opportunities to explore their love for nature.
In the later years of their lives, Jack and Jana moved to Holly Creek in Centennial, CO, where they experienced the fulfillment of retirement, building strong relationships with the community. They enjoyed living close to their friends, the Den Braber family. Jana remained active in volunteering, always ready to assist wherever needed.
Jana was known for her ability to relate to people of all ages. Her nurturing nature and love for children, along with her talent for cooking, crafting, and planning memorable events, made her a beloved figure among family and friends. She was particularly known for her homemade soups, which she often shared with others. Jana also enjoyed sewing, knitting, cross-stitching, and creating intricate temari balls. A lover of books and audio books, she found peace in the arts.
One of Jana's unique traits was her love for organ music, claiming she found it soothing. Her favorite hymns, including "How Great Thou Art" and "Great is Thy Faithfulness," reflected her deep Christian faith, and Psalm 121, the "Traveler's Psalm," was a scripture she cherished throughout her life.
Jana's life was a testament to her Christian virtues—her kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith. She was a woman who profoundly touched the lives of those around her, leaving a legacy of love and service that will never be forgotten. Jana is survived by her sisters Marrie and Bep, as well as many nieces and nephews, including nephew Andy Knevel. Although Jana and Jack had no children, they loved nephews, nieces, and many children with generosity and affection. All will carry her memory in their hearts.
Her life came to an end on March 25, 2025, but the impact of her love, faith, and caring spirit will live on forever.
