Helen Mary Wells passed away on April 6, 2025 at the age of 91. She was born on August 1, 1933 in Sterling, Colorado where she grew up on a farm. Helen graduated from St. Anthony Catholic High School in Sterling, Colorado. She married John Edward Wells in Goodland, Kansas on February 5, 1953. Helen and John divorced in 1981.
Helen wore many hats during her lifetime. She was an expert seamstress who could sew anything you wanted. For many years, Helen owned a sewing machine store in Sterling with her former husband where she taught sewing classes. After selling the store and moving to Denver, Helen worked at Hancock Fabrics and various other jobs. However, the job she most cherished was being a loving mom, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. Helen was a true matriarch.
Helen loved to camp. She spent most summers at Colorado Heights in Monument, Colorado, camping and making lasting friendships. If not camping there, Helen camped with one of her children or grandchildren. She loved to play Bingo and had many “Bingo Buddies” who played together in Arvada at 64th and Sheridan every Friday night. Helen also loved to gamble, both in Las Vegas and Blackhawk; penny slots were her favorite (when penny slots were true penny slots). There was not an animal or baby Helen did not love. Her beloved dog Shiloh was surely there to greet her in heaven.
Helen was preceded in death by her daughter, mother, father, brothers, sisters, son-in-law, nieces and nephews. She is survived by her son Dennis, daughter Karen, daughter Cindy (Rick), daughter LuAnn (Kevin), son Rodney (Lori), 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and her brother Lawrence and sister Jean (Bill). Helen is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and lifelong friends.
A Celebration of Life in Helen’s memory will be held Sunday, June 1, 2025 at 1:00 pm, at 15194 Overland Trail, Brighton, Colorado 80603.
