Major G. Philip Shovar, born September 30, 1940, died February 19, 2018 at 77 years old at North Colorado Medical Center Emergency Room. His memorial service was held at St. Patrick Presbyterian Church, Greeley, Colorado , February 27, 2018.
Phil is survived by his wife Joan Ruffner Shovar , originally from Luray, VA, his son Douglas Shovar of Jacksonville, Florida, brother Elliott Shovar, sister-in-law Susan, and their sons Lauren and Philip, a twin sister Sally Shovar Byers and her son Mark and daughters Sarah Elizabeth and Laura, and a nephew Joseph Tulleners. He is preceded in death by his parents Mark and Willa Shovar who lived in Moultry, Georgia.
Phil served as a Medic in the Navy and then entered the medical field to continue his education in Nursing, receiving his Certification as Nurse Anesthetist. He then served in the Army Nurse Corps serving in Vietnam, departing with 5 service campaign stars, and 6 rows of decorations, retiring from Military Service as a Major after 28 years. He later received Masters of Arts in Psychology to study Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and its effects on our military combat involved veterans. He enjoyed teaching at every level he worked and took the opportunity to teach whenever he could.
Phil enjoyed participation in the Naval Festibule Association and the NRA. He enjoyed target shooting, and his achievements in the Development of the First Effective Treatment of PTSD which included writing a chapter in the first text for the treatment of PTSD, published by the DAV in 1985 and 1987.

Major Shovar's final resting place will be Arlington Cemetery in Virginia.
