George T. Scott Sr., died peacefully in the loving arms of his wife, Lorraine, on the morning of his 91st birthday. George was born in 1934 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Earl and Fern Scott. He attended Washburn High School where he excelled in basketball and track, taking city and state records in low and high hurdles. At his senior graduation, he was awarded the Leonard Moses award for superior scholarship, athletics, and good citizenship.
He received two degrees, Chemical Engineering and Business Administration (Production Management) from the University of Minnesota in 1957, and earned an MBA in Economics from the University of Houston in 1963.
After serving four years in ROTC while at the University of Minnesota and two years in the U.S. Army Ordnance Corp, he began his professional career with Union Carbide in Texas, Louisiana, and New York.
In 1978, George became General Manager of the Polystyrene business for Gulf Oil Chemicals in Houston, Texas. Then in 1980, he began managing the Polyethylene businesses.
In 1983, following three years of courtship, George and Lorraine Ann Michalka of Pennsylvania married!
In 1985, George was named Vice President General Manager of Chevron Chemicals Olefin and Plastics Division and many successes followed: the acquisition of the Plexco Pipe Company; the inception of the Quality Control Process in his division; and ultimately, the implementation of the Quality Control Process throughout the corporation. In all of his corporate positions, George was known for strategic thinking and big picture analysis that brought record profits to the Chemical and Plastics Division.
George retired January 1, 1996, and thereafter resided in Houston, Texas, and Colorado Springs, Colorado.
George was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and a member of the University of Minnesota Track Team. He served on The Board of Directors of the Society of Plastics Industries, the Executive Committee of the American Plastics Council, and the Creekside Industries Board. He served as an Elder, Deacon, and Clerk of Session in Presbyterian Churches in Louisiana and New York. He served on the Harris County Grand Jury for three terms. He was a member of the Garden of the Gods Club in Colorado Springs and a past member of the Army Navy Club in Washington D.C.
George enjoyed bird hunting, fly fishing, golf, bridge, reading and traveling the world with Lorraine. Among his many interests, he was a student of history and politics. He read the newspaper daily and always worked the crossword puzzle until his vision worsened. He continued reading at his enlarging machine, “Today in History”, the word jumble, and the comics. He loved chocolate and lemon desserts and especially Blue Bell and Brinkman’s ice cream! He was also known for having a quick wit and telling jokes in the accent of the subject matter! He had an unparalleled business acumen, but at all times, he was a kind and loving gentleman.
George was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Booth of St. Paul, in 1978; by his youngest son, Robert B. Scott, in 2017; and by his sister, Agnes Lovaas, in 2023. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Lorraine Michalka Scott; son George T. Scott Jr; son John G. Scott (Rebecca); two grandchildren, Susan Lee Wallish and Allen Scott (Courtney); and four great grandchildren, Bethany and Rosalee Wallish and Thomas and William Scott; two nieces, Kae Jewell and Mary Curtis (Allen) and sons Michael and Kristopher; and a sister-in-law, Cathy Barger (Mark).
Lorraine would like to express her sincere thanks to the Compassus Hospice Group of Colorado Springs and George’s devoted, loving caregivers, Irma, Sandra and Leslie, all for taking special care of George those last days and years.
