Fred attended schools in Brooklyn, NY and a boys' school in Spring Valley, NY. He graduated from Brooklyn Manual High School . Following graduation he had a job at Lederle Laboratories. A year later he moved with his family to California.
There in Early 1942, he enlisted in the US Army, where he served in the infantry. His unit crossed the Elbe river into Germany near the end of World War 2. Fred received several medals during the time he served.
Following his release from the Army, Fred attended the University of Denver, where he received a BA in International Relations and an MA in Economics. In 1954 he and Norma Kasman were married in Denver, Colorado. A son was born in 1956 and a daughter in 1957. Later arrivals were: Alan, born in 1961 and Craig, born 1963.
Fred took a job as instructor at Yakima Community College at Yakima, Washington. Remaining at this position for 4 years until he was awarded a Kellogg Fellowship to study community college administration at the University of Texas at Austin. Fred received his PhD in 1961 and took a job at Neosho, Missouri to assist a start-up community college. From the Ozarks the family, moved to a new Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina. After 2 years in the South, the mountains of Colorado beckoned and once more the family moved.
Back to Colorado, to stay. Fred took a job in Rangely, Colorado. When a job opened to start a new community college in Colorado Springs, Fred was first in line. Along with five other people: Bob Hatton, Leonard Smith, Don Sieck and a director of facilities as well as Carol van Lieu. They spent a year organizing and planning a new college in Colorado Springs to be known initially as El Paso Community College. After 18 years, Fred once more looked to a new college in Aurora, Colorado. In 1991, Fred retired and he and his wife returned to Colorado Springs.
Fred died on September 11 at the Spanish Peaks Veterans living center near Walsenberg, Colorado.
Fred leaves behind his wife of 64 years, two sons by an early marriage, Ronald and David, and four children of his second marriage: Wayne, Elaine, Alan and Craig.
A memorial service is planned for November 19, 2018, at 1:00 PM in the community room of Manitou Springs Community Church at 703 Pawnee Ave. Manitou Springs, Co.
