Douglas (Doug) Edson Nelson, age 93, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, after a battle with a terminal illness. Born on January 31, 1932, in Crystal Lake, IA, Doug was the son of Sylvester and Inez Nelson, and stepson to David Armon Thompson. Raised in South Dakota, Doug later spent his adult life in Colorado, where he built a legacy of laughter, love, and hard work.
To know Doug was to know a man who lived life with a twinkle in his eye and a penchant for storytelling. He loved to laugh, share memories, and tinker with projects—a mind as sharp as his always found something to fix, build, or improve. Doug’s exceptional memory and wisdom made him a cherished confidant and a source of strength to those around him.
Doug spent 30 years working for the Union Pacific Railroad, a career that reflected his dedication, intellect, and strong work ethic. Outside of work, Doug’s life was defined by his love for family, friends, music, antique cars and tractors.
He is survived by his beloved Ruth Winsett, his daughters Shan and Brenda Lee, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Doug’s laughter and warmth continues to echo in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his brothers Rodney, and Don, his sisters Kay, Joy, Pat, and Sharon and his beloved wife of 44 years, May Nelson.
Doug’s spirit, kindness, and strength have left an indelible mark on everyone he touched. May his memory bring comfort to those who mourn his passing and serve as a reminder of a life beautifully lived.
