Del was a chemist with the Federal Government U.S Geological Survey until his retirement in August of 1996. Del led an active life, traveling and attending conventions related to his job. Del was a veteran serving two years in the Army. One of his hobbies was playing the piano. On weekend he would play at various jazz clubs in the Denver area. Del was well known by a variety of musicians. He played the piano at country clubs and for private weddings as well. Del enjoyed reading, often going to Barnes and Noble on his days off. He was also an avid chess player, he would meet with friends 1 to 2 times a week to enjoy a pick up game of chess. Del belonged to an organization called NOBCCHE also known as the National Organization for Black Chemist and Chemical Engineers. Del was involved with NOBCCHE for at least 10 years, traveling annually to conventions in various states.
Del was blessed to live 88 years. Outliving all of his siblings who were younger than him. He lived a fulfilled life. He was a devoted father, husband and a great provider to his family.
Del is survived by his loving wife Donna Hopkins. His children Jason, Anton, Monte, and Rachelle Hopkins. Step-children Katrina and Damon McNeal. And his grandchildren David Hopkins, Eric Hopkins, Rebecca Marquez, Madiera McQuade-Hopkins, Briana Irving, Devan Irving, Chevalier McNeal, Tyshyn McNeal, and Ciel McNeal.
Del is preceded in death by his parents, Delmont and Dorothy Hopkins. His sister Marven Sampson, and brothers Arthur, Victor, and Tommy Hopkins and his nephew Rodney Sampson.
There will be a Celebration of life Saturday, May 27th, 2023 at 1:00 PM, service location is TBD.
