Berkley Arnold Tague died 10 May 2025 at the age of 92. Born in Brooklyn, New York on 10 October 1932, he was the son of a career military officer from Colorado and spent most of his childhood in Denver. He graduated from East High School at the age of 16 and then moved to the east coast to study at Wesleyan University. During his junior year, he dropped out of college to enlist in the Air Force, where he served for several years before returning to complete his studies. He then earned a master’s degree in mathematics at MIT. While at MIT, Berkley became interested in computing and chose to join Bell Laboratories rather than continuing his work toward a PhD. He spent his career working at Bell Labs (later AT&T) in Murray Hill and Whippany, NJ. He was part of the team that developed the UNIX operating system, shepherding its large-scale adoption first at Bell Labs and then as a commercially available system.
While a student at Wesleyan, Berkley met Annemarie Hammer, whom he married in 1965. They lived in New Jersey until 2007, when they moved back to Berkley’s hometown of Denver. He was an avid tennis player and skier, taking advantage of Denver’s proximity to the slopes well into his 80s. He was above all a loving and devoted husband and father. He is survived by Annemarie, his son Peter, his daughter Ingrid Helen, and his brothers, George and Lincoln.
A memorial service will be held at the Balfour Riverfront Park, 1500 Little Raven St., Denver, Colorado at 3:00 p.m. on 27 June. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Wesleyan University.
