Benjamin Earl Sinclair was born on June 30, 1955, in Denver, Colorado. He was the fifth of six children, and during his youth the family moved around the state several times, so he grew up in Golden, Palisade, and Westminster. He loved to go fishing, camping, motocross and getting into all sorts of mischief. In 1971, his family moved to Littleton, and he graduated from Littleton High School in 1974.
After graduation, in 1975 he enlisted in the Air National Guard, and did his Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, followed by Air Force technical school at Chanute Air Force Base in Peoria, Illinois, where he received training to be a mechanic. He served in the 138th Tactical Air Command, and rose to the rank of Staff Sargent before receiving an honorable discharge in 1980.
After his military training, he was hired as a school bus mechanic for Cherry Creek School District. He worked for the district for nearly 20 years and received the Superintendent’s Award for Employee of the Year award in 1986. After leaving Cherry Creek, he worked for Discount Tire for 5 years, rising to the title of assistant manager, before going on disability in 2000.
In 1978, he went on a blind date with the woman he would later marry (even though unbeknownst to him, she agreed to the blind date thinking he was someone else!). Ben and Linda had their first date on April 28th, 1978, and he proposed six weeks later. They were married on August 23rd, 1980, and both Ben and Linda would tell you they truly married their best friend and soulmate. They had two children, Jen and Josh, who both grew up in Littleton. Ben’s favorite thing in the world was being a dad, and he was as funny and crazy as he was loving. His children were the two things he was proudest of in the whole world.
Besides being a world-class dad and dedicated employee, Ben believed that a person should live out their faith, and put that into practice through service to his church and his community. Over the years, Ben served in the Civil Air Patrol (his unit was the Black Sheep Squadron, which he said his mom thought was very fitting), rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. He only resigned when his health would no longer allow him to go on search and rescue missions. He also was a dedicated volunteer with the Littleton Police Department, volunteering in various capacities, although his favorite was service on the initial steering committee for the CSV, or Community Safety Volunteer, team. He was trained to work the police radio, provide safety at accident scenes, and directing traffic. He loved helping his community in any way he could, and particularly loved and respected the Littleton Police officers he was privileged to interact with. One of his deepest regrets was having to step down from the CSV when he felt his health would pose a safety risk for those he served with. Besides these ongoing volunteer activities, he always found ways to help anyone in need, feeling that no act of kindness was too small or too unimportant, and that it was through serving and caring for others that he could best show his faith and the love of Jesus.
In addition to his wife and children, he leaves behind a son-in-law Dan and daughter-in-law April, both of whom he felt so blessed to be his kids, too. Also, he loved being the crazy grandpa to Sami, Kenz, Kodie and Mikayla, and these four great kids brought more joy to his life than they will ever know. He also leaves behind three sisters (Jane, Shirley and Edna) and one brother (Mark). He was preceded in death by his parents, Preston and Gloria Sinclair, and one brother, Preston.
Ben loved nature and the beauty of God’s creation, and had a special place in his heart for wolves.
