Pedro A Cortes-Hernandez

Pedro A. Cortés-Hernández, un querido esposo, padre, abuelo y bisabuelo, falleció en paz el 8 de abril de 2025 en Orlando, Florida. Nació el 13 de marzo de 1930 en Bayamón, Puerto Rico, donde pasó sus primeros años rodeado del cariño de su familia y amigos de toda la vida. Su camino lo llevó más adelante a la ciudad de Nueva York, donde construyó una hermosa vida basada en el servicio, el amor y la comunidad.

Pedro sirvió a su país con orgullo como infante de marina de los Estados Unidos y, más adelante, dedicó muchos años al servicio público como Secretario Principal en la Corte Suprema del Bronx, en Nueva York. También fue un intérprete experto de español e inglés, siempre dispuesto a ayudar a los demás mediante la comunicación y la comprensión.

Pedro fue un líder comunitario apasionado y entregado, cuyo corazón siempre estuvo enfocado en elevar a los demás. Dedicó su energía al béisbol juvenil a través de La Liga Pedro Oquendo De La Ciudad De Nueva York, donde se desempeñó como Presidente y tocó la vida de innumerables jóvenes, brindándoles orientación, ánimo y un amor profundo por el juego. Tras mudarse a Florida, su compromiso con el servicio continuó al asumir roles de liderazgo en La Casa de Puerto Rico, sirviendo con orgullo como Presidente y Vicepresidente, mientras celebraba y apoyaba a la comunidad puertorriqueña que tanto amaba.

Pedro también extendió su bondad a través de la Fundación Niños del Amor, donde se desempeñó como Presidente. Mediante incansables esfuerzos de recaudación de fondos y una profunda creencia en el poder de la compasión, trabajó para mejorar la vida de niños y familias necesitadas.

En sus últimos años, Pedro retribuyó a su comunidad ofreciendo su tiempo como voluntario en la organización Seniors Vs. Crime. Con un corazón generoso y un profundo sentido de compasión, dedicó su tiempo a ayudar a otros adultos mayores a mantenerse a salvo de estafas—compartiendo su sabiduría tanto a través de un programa semanal de radio como en cálidas conversaciones personales.

Pedro fue un luchador—no en el sentido tradicional, sino con la fuerza silenciosa de sus palabras y el poder de sus convicciones. Armado con papel y pluma, alzó su voz por aquello en lo que creía, escribiendo con pasión, propósito y corazón. Sus escritos reflexivos eran publicados con frecuencia en el periódico, un testimonio de su firme compromiso con la justicia, la verdad y la comunidad que tanto amaba.

Pedro ahora se ha reunido con sus queridos padres, Otilia Hernandez y Pedro A. Cortes Sr y sus tres hermanos: Fernando Cortes, Efrain Cortes and Ismael Cortes quienes lo precedieron en la eternidad.

Deja un legado de amor en su dedicada esposa Nivia Meléndez, sus cinco amados hijos de un matrimonio anterior: Pedro A. Cortés Jr., María E. Muñiz, Juan E. Cortés, Luis A. Cortés y Fernando J. Cortés, además de diez nietos y doce bisnietos. Su familia fue su orgullo y alegría, y su amor por ellos fue incondicional e inquebrantable.

Pedro tenía una gran pasión por la vida. Fue un jugador competitivo de dominó, y con orgullo ganó muchos torneos. Encontraba alegría en los placeres sencillos: jugar a la lotería con esperanza en el corazón y escuchar eternas canciones de amor en español que reflejaban las profundas emociones que llevaba con tanta gracia.

La familia desea expresar su más sincero agradecimiento a Advent Health Hospice por el cuidado compasivo y el consuelo que brindaron a Pedro en sus últimos días.

La vida de Pedro fue una vida de amor, servicio y dedicacion. Será profundamente extrañado y eternamente recordado en los corazones de todos aquellos que lo conocieron y amaron.

Pedro A. Cortes-Hernandez, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2025, in Orlando, Florida. He was born on March 13, 1930, in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, where he spent his early years surrounded by the warmth of his family and lifelong friends. His journey later led him to New York City, where he built a beautiful life rooted in service, love, and community.

Pedro proudly served his country as a United States Marine and later dedicated many years to public service as a Senior Court Clerk at the Bronx Supreme Court in New York. He was also a skilled Spanish-English interpreter, always eager to help others through communication and understanding.

Pedro was a passionate and devoted community leader whose heart was always focused on uplifting others. He poured his energy into youth baseball through La Liga Pedro Oquendo De La Ciudad De Nueva York, where he served as President and touched the lives of countless young people, offering them guidance, encouragement, and a love for the game. After moving to Florida, his commitment to service continued as he took on leadership roles with La Casa de Puerto Rico, proudly serving as both President and Vice President while celebrating and supporting the Puerto Rican community he held so dear.

Pedro also extended his kindness through the Children of Love Foundation, where he served as President. Through tireless fundraising efforts and a deep belief in the power of compassion, he worked to brighten the lives of children and families in need.

In his later years, Pedro gave back to his community by volunteering with the Seniors Vs. Crime organization. With a generous heart and a deep sense of compassion, he dedicated his time to helping fellow seniors stay safe from scams—sharing his wisdom both over the airwaves on a weekly radio program and through warm, in-person conversations.

Pedro was a fighter—not in the traditional sense, but with the quiet strength of his words and the power of his convictions. Armed with a pen and paper, he spoke up for what he believed in, writing with passion, purpose, and heart. His thoughtful pieces were often published in the newspaper, a testament to his unwavering commitment to justice, truth, and the community he so deeply cared for.

Pedro is now reunited with his beloved parents, Otilia Hernandez and Pedro A. Cortes Sr and three siblings: Fernando Cortes, Efrain Cortes and Ismael Cortes who preceded him in death.

He leaves behind a loving legacy in his devoted wife Nivia Melendez, his five cherished children from a previous marriage Pedro A. Cortes Jr., Maria E. Muniz, Juan E. Cortes, Luis A. Cortes and Fernando J. Cortes, ten grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. His family was his pride and joy, and his love for them was unconditional and unwavering.

Pedro had a zest for life. He was a competitive dominoes player who proudly won many tournaments. He found joy in the simple pleasures—playing the lotto with hope in his heart and listening to timeless Spanish love songs that reflected the deep emotions he carried so gracefully.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Advent Health Hospice for the compassionate care and comfort they provided Pedro in his final days.

Pedro’s life was one of love, service, and resilience. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
