Born on July 31, 1934, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Paul led a life defined by dedication and connection. He later made his home in Lima, Ohio, where he and his beloved wife, of 69 years, Thelma “Tootie” Whitaker, raised their family with love and care. Paul’s entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly throughout his career. He began by selling yearbooks to schools before transitioning to providing band uniforms and graduation announcements. Eventually, he became the owner-operator of an independent food concession business specializing in elephant ears and funnel cakes. Through his work, Paul relished the opportunity to meet countless individuals, treasuring the connections he made along the way.
After retiring to Clermont, Florida, Paul embraced his love of golf, spending many joyful days on the courses in his community. A natural conversationalist with a warm demeanor, he continued to brighten the lives of those around him by sharing stories and engaging with people from all walks of life.
Paul is survived by his devoted wife, Tootie; his daughter, Joni Maher; his son, Mark Whitaker (Keri); his granddaughter, Alex Cheadle; and his grandson, Reece Whitaker. He was preceded in passing by his parents Fred S. Whitaker and Mabel Hilton Whitaker, as well as his siblings, Marion Pennington Woods, John W. Whitaker, and Clona C. Nolan.
A service to celebrate Paul’s life will be announced at a later date. He will be laid to rest at Samaria Baptist Church in Paragon, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer’s Association
Paul’s warmth, wisdom and sense of humor will be deeply missed but forever cherished by all who knew him.
