Joseph D. Akin Jr, age 77, of Haines City, Florida, passed away peacefully at his home on April 3, 2025. He was born on August 12, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Joseph D. Akin Sr. and Thelma Akin.
Joseph honorably served in the Navy for a brief period, after which he embarked on a diverse career journey. His last position was as a charter bus driver for Small World Tours, and he also dedicated 18 years of service as Polk County CAP (Citizens Assistance Program) Coordinator. He will be fondly remembered for his love of golf, his passion for jewelry and hats, and his unwavering commitment to the Polk County CAP program.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife, Jeree Akin; his children, Joy (Dave) Buckley and Jeffrey (Theresa) Spencer; his grandchildren, James, Anthony (Danielle), and Mackenzie; and his great-grandchildren, Christopher and Leo. He is also survived by his siblings, Cyndi Lockhart and Stephen Akin. Joseph was preceded in death by his siblings Janice Brady and David Akin.
A service to celebrate and honor Joseph’s life will be held at a later date at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, where he will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Polk County Sheriff's Charities, Inc., in Joseph's memory.
