John Leonard McConnell, 88, of Orlando, Florida, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026. He was born on November 3, 1937, in Akron, Ohio, to the late John Archibald McConnell and Isobel (Peters) McConnell. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Kaylee McConnell.
John is survived by his loving wife, Janice (Rinal) McConnell of Orlando; his son, John (Melissa) McConnell of Orlando; his daughter, Laurel (Mike) Payne of Gainesville; his grandson, John A. (Amy) McConnell of Orlando; his granddaughters, Emily and Erica Payne of Gainesville; and his great-grandchildren, Claire and Jax McConnell of Orlando.
John earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Ohio State University. He began his professional career teaching physics at East Tennessee State University before going on to work for many years at AT&T and Computer Associates. Later, he founded and operated his own company, T-Rexx Techs.
A devoted man of faith, John was an active member of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke in Orlando, where he was a passionate member of the choir and led Bible studies that touched the lives of many within the church and beyond.
John possessed a brilliant and deeply curious mind. A member of Mensa, he was, by every measure, a genius - yet he carried that distinction with remarkable humility. He never spoke of it or drew attention to himself, and those who met him were far more likely to notice his warmth, kindness, and genuine interest in others than his extraordinary intellect. His curiosity led him to explore theology, quantum physics, metaphysics, and even develop his own philosophy, which he called “Inspirationality,” leaving a meaningful impact on many.
He had a rare gift for making others feel seen, valued, and appreciated. Whether in a brief interaction or a lifelong relationship, he approached every person with kindness, curiosity, and sincere care. He served as a guide, mentor, and steady presence to many, offering wisdom grounded in both intellect and compassion.
To his family, John was everything - a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, as well as a faithful friend. He was a spiritual rock to those who knew him, someone people turned to for guidance on life, faith, and everything in between. His deep knowledge of scripture and his ability to connect it to everyday life left a lasting impression. He lived generously, freely giving his time, wisdom, and compassion, and was equally known for his sense of humor, often bringing laughter when it was needed most.
Above all, John lived what he believed. He carried himself with humility, grace, and a deep sense of purpose, seeing the good in everyone he met. He will be remembered as a man of integrity, faith, intellect, and extraordinary kindness - a truly magnificent presence in the lives of those who knew him.
A funeral service will be held on April 24, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke in Orlando, Florida, with a reception to follow in the Great Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to Second Harvest Food Bank of Orlando, the Cathedral Church of St. Luke Choir in Orlando, Florida, or Nehemiah’s Children, Inc., a charity supporting children in Haiti.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for the kindness, wisdom, and quiet grace he brought into the lives of all who knew him.
