She was born on October 23, 1935 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma where her father, Colonel George M. Wertz, was stationed as a First Lieutenant. Mr. Wertz family originated from Johnston, Pennsylvania in which the Great Flood of 1889 was still mentioned. Colonel Wertz traveled internationally in Germany, Middle East, and Korea. Georgia accompanied him as a proud “Army Brat”. In the early 1950s, she established herself in the Norfolk/VA Beach area for 40 years.
Georgia married Jack Stewart on November 1, 1958 in Fort Monroe, VA. In 1998, she relocated to Florida with her husband to be close to her two sons where they spoiled their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also traveled regularly to Texas to love on her daughter and family.
She attended Greenbrier College early in life but graduated from Washington Mary College as a registered nurse in August of 1958. She obtained her teaching degree in May of 1979 from Old Dominion University.
Prior to her marriage to Jack, she worked as a nurse. After marriage, she dedicated her life to raising her family. After the family grew and left the house, Georgia returned to work as a schoolteacher for nearly 20 years in the state of Virginia. Mom was active in Our Savior's Lutheran Church and enjoyed bowling, crafts, knitting, cross stitch, and crocheting. She owned a small needlework shop in Virginia Beach for 10 years on Shore Drive. She loved Star Trek, old movies, and kept up with new technology. As a life-long reader, she continuously learned about medical, professional, historical, and political topics.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Stewart, who passed on New Year’s Eve in 2019. She is survived by her children: Scot Stewart, Joy Gregory, and Chris Stewart. Georgia and Jack had 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren (with one on the way).
Georgia was a great patriot who witnessed 17 presidential terms, the end of the great depression, WWII, Korean war, moon landing, Kennedy assassination, Vietnam war, Afghanistan & Iraq war, fall of Berlin wall, 9/11, the internet boom, Covid, and the information age.
She believed in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and we look forward to the heavenly reunion we will have with her.
