"Jean A. Long also known as Jean F. Asplund or “Auntie Sis”, of Altamonte Springs, FL, died on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Florida Hospital Altamonte. She was 95 years old. Jean was born on January 7, 1921 in Ashland, Wisconsin. She attended Beaser Elementary School, Ashland High School, and Northland College, all located in her hometown of Ashland, Wisconsin. After graduating she went directly into nurses training at Mounds-Midway School of Nursing in St. Paul, MINN. In 1948 she married Leonard Hunter Long “Charlie”, and together they had 1 daughter, Patricia Ruth Long. Jean worked as an RN Navy Nurse during World War II serving as an Ensign Lieutenant Junior Grade, (ENS: LTJG) and after the war was over, went to work for the Civil Service as an OBGYN Nurse at the Orlando Navy Hospital until she retired in 1986 after 33 years of service. Jean loved her family, loved her church and loved her friends which she kept close. She would often joke and say “I don’t like people, but I like you” but in reality, was one of the most giving, selfless and compassionate people a person could know. She truly felt that she never met a stranger. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at the Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford and loved working in the Church kitchen for “Wednesday Night Dinners” at St. John Lutheran Church. She will be deeply and greatly missed. Preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Ann Asplund, sister, Maxine “Mac” Dvorak, and two brothers, Frank Asplund “Brother” and Donald Asplund “Lovie”. Jean is survived by her two remaining brothers, Rodney Neil Asplund “Washie”, Kenneth Leroy Asplund “Larry”, her daughter, Patricia Ruth Long, 4 grandchildren, Mela D. Shaw, Christopher M. Nutt, Jason M. Nutt and Donald Hindson, Jr. as well as her two great grandchildren, Matthew Nutt and Madison Nutt. A Memorial Service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, 1600 S Orlando Ave, Winter Park, FL 32789 this Saturday, December 17th, 2016 at 11am. The family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful help and care given by LifeCare of Altamonte, and all of the wonder nurses and staff who were with her these last few months. Services are open to all who knew Jean and would like to come and celebrate her life through memories and stories. If so desired, friends and family may also make memorial contributions in Jean’s name to St. John Lutheran Church or send flowers."
