Kitty was born on October 6, 1934, in Albuquerque’s Barelas neighborhood to Wing and Lin Ong. She was one of nine children and is survived by her siblings Jean Ong Jew, Jane Ong Baker, Tane Ong Chan, Richard Ong, and Randy Ong. She was preceded in death by her brothers David Ong and Kim Ong, and her sister Anna Mae Ong Doon.
One of Kitty’s favorite childhood stories reflected both her independence and sense of humor. Because her mother, Lin, did not have the time or English skills to register her children for school, the children enrolled themselves. When it was Kitty’s turn, she chose the name “Stella” after a beautiful Hispanic woman in the neighborhood whom she admired. Throughout her school years, she was known as Stella Ong.
Kitty spent her life working alongside her family in their grocery stores and restaurants, retiring in 2002 after decades of serving the Albuquerque community.
Kitty will be remembered for her boundless generosity, her quick wit, her tireless work ethic, and the countless lives she touched through simple acts of kindness.
She is survived by her daughters, Debra Lynn Stephens (Steve) and Lynae Rae Haddad (Allen); her grandchildren, Benjamin Stephens (Nicole), Jason Stephens (Amy), Samuel Stephens (Martina), Bernadette Hodges, Ashley Haddad Langer (Jason L.), and Allen Michael Haddad Jr.; and her great-grandchildren, Triston Stephens, Leah Stephens, Nia Stephens (Angel in Heaven), Hannah Stephens, Aden Stephens, Luke Stephens, Eva Stephens, Valerie Stephens, and Hunter Haddad.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that charitable donations be made in Kitty’s honor to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
