Michael was born April 25, 1972 in Racine Wisconsin. He graduated from Washington Park High School in Racine in 1990 and graduated from the College of Santa Fe in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1994 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art, with a concentration in Photography. While a student at the college he modeled for Glenna Goodacre’s Vietnam Women’s Memorial Statue as the wounded and fallen soldier.
He continued to reside in Santa Fe until his death.
Michael was an avid and creative artist and educator. After graduation from the College of Santa Fe, Michael pursued a career as an artist. His work was featured in many art competitions, gallery and museum shows and exhibitions. His pursuit of art and photography took him to many places, from a college internship semester in New York to summer projects in Santa Fe, Germany and Mexico.
During his early career as an artist, he worked as an assistant to a number of artists. His work with them was invaluable. The attention he gave to teaching and details was noted and greatly appreciated, the result being that he was invited to teach a photography class at the College of Santa Fe, while also managing the darkroom facilities. This further stimulated his interest in teaching, and he then enrolled at the Northern New Mexico Community College to earn his teaching certification.
This began his career as an educator and soon thereafter he began teaching full time at Monte del Sol Charter School in Santa Fe where he taught for 20 years, creating the school’s pioneering comprehensive photography program teaching from 19th century processes through to contemporary digital technologies.
If you were to ask Michael about his greatest accomplishments, he would say it was having the opportunity to shape and influence young minds through photography. If you were to ask his students, they would say it was the lessons in life that they learned from Michael while also learning photography. Michael impacted the lives of countless students and adults as an educator and a friend.
Mike is survived by his parents Jack and Karen Webb of Racine, Wisconsin, relatives and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his sister Stephanie.
To carry on his legacy, the Webb family requests, If interested, that donations can be made to the love of his life, The Monte De Sol Charter School.
