

Cassel, Mary Alice (Wood) - Obituary Mary Alice (Wood) Cassel passed away August 18, 2024 in Raton, New Mexico. She was born on March 26, 1934 in Port Lavaca, Texas to James Perry Wood and Mary (Moreland) Wood. Preceding her in death were her loving husband of fifty-seven years Virgil Claud Cassel, her parents, her sister Charlotte Faye and husband Carl Manuel, brother Charles Ray Wood, brother James Robert Wood and sister Clara Margaret and husband Richard Bass. She was also proceeded in death by her son-in-law Gary Doffitt. She is survived by her daughter Cindy (Michael) Tachman of Granger IN and their children Maggie Tachman, Eli (Paula Junn) Tachman and A.J. Tachman; son Ron (Jeanne) Cassel of St. Charles MO and children David (Brooke) Cassel, Daniel (Randi) Cassel and their children Elizabeth Jeanne and Arthur Wood Cassel; Daylon (Rachel) Cassel and their children Olivia and Max Cassel, and Avery Cassel; daughter Terri Cassel of Raton NM and her children Samantha (Clayton) Hufford and Adam Grosz; son David (Darlinda) Cassel of Edmond OK and their daughter Veronica (Wyatt) Short; daughter Julie (Chris) Storer of Johnson City TX and Raton NM, and children Zach (Michaela) Young and their children Kinleigh and Mason Young, Josh (Danielle) Young and their children Rudy, Louisa and Ray Young, and Marcus Storer; and daughter Casey Garrard of California and her children Faith (Donnell) Weigand and children Wyatt and Maggie Weigand, and Julia (Colter) Martin and son Fisher Martin. Mary Alice and Virgil met in Port Lavaca and their journey through life together led them to homes in Texas, Illinois, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. Following Virgil’s death she lived in California and came to Raton for an extended visit before she passed. Mary Alice will be remembered for her kind heart and Christian faith, as well as her sharp wit and belief that “home” was anywhere she could be with family. The children of Mary Alice extend their gratitude to the Raton EMS and all the staff at the Miner’s Colfax Medical Center Emergency Room and Medical/Surgical Department and MCMC Clinic for the compassion and care they showed “Miss Mary”while she was under their care. Special thanks, as well, to Robin Pilley of Anvoi Compassionate Hospice Care for the support and guidance she provided in the final hours. Mary Alice will be interred beside Virgil at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis MO on Friday, October 25th - 10:15am.
