

Mark Andrew Williams, age 72, of Tijeras, NM passed away on Father's Day, June 21, 2026, after a courageous five year battle with colorectal cancer. June 21st also marked the beginning of the summer solstice.
Born on March 20, 1954, in Albuquerque, NM, Mark lived a life defined by curiosity, determination and a deep appreciation for the natural world. He spent part of his life in Richmond, VA before returning to New Mexico, where he made his home. He was a descendant of Mayflower voyager and Plymouth Colony governor William Bradford (est. 1620), an early leader in what is now Massachusetts.
Mark earned his degree in Environmental Sciences from Texas State University. After working as a surveyor and traveling extensively throughout the United States, he returned to college to pursue his passion for engineering, earning a degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. He later obtained his Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation and built a distinguished career as an environmental engineer. He worked for General Electric and the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM), where he was dedicated to protecting both people and the environment through his work.
Mark was an avid photographer, ornithophile, naturalist and birdwatcher who found great joy in observing and capturing the beauty of the natural world. He enjoyed hiking, surveying, traveling, exploring new places and a good New Mexico tempranillo. His work as a surveyor took him across the United States and his love of adventure carried him around the world. He was a proud member of the Sierra Club and a devoted advocate for conservation and the outdoors.
He was the handiest of men, always working on a project. Mark was hardworking, determined and strong willed and he never hesitated to stand by his convictions. His perseverance and resourcefulness earned the respect of family, friends and colleagues alike.
Mark is preceded in death by his father, William "Bill" Williams, who passed away in his 30's and his mother, Priscilla McEwan Gables, who passed away at the age of 95.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Latimer; his step sons, Colin Latimer and Eric Latimer; his step daughter, Mary Meredith; his sisters, Elizabeth Villarreal and Margaret Williams; his brother, Grant Gables; his nieces and nephews, Natalie Quiring, Alec Gables, Emily Villarreal, Sean Minns and his beloved dog, Roxie.
Mark will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, unwavering determination, generous heart and deep love of nature. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the places he explored.
