Beth grew up in Hamden Connecticut and from an early age was passionate about photography, art, music, dogs, cooking and science. After graduating with honors from Hamden High School and then Colgate University, Beth returned to the New Haven Connecticut area for several years and performed research at Yale University Labs with a focus on epidemiology and public health. It was during this time that Beth developed an interest in cycling, transitioning from casual commuter to racing with the Connecticut cycling community. Beth relocated to New Mexico to progress her education and to continue her competitive bike racing where she completed a PHD in Exercise Physiology at UNM. Beth went on to fulfill one of her lifelong goals by graduating with honors from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine (1993). Beth had a long and successful career as a Physician focused on Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. Her compassion for her patients and razor-sharp knowledge of her practice was respected by all.
In addition to her earlier interest in cycling, Beth remained passionate about cooking, reading and completing the New York Times Crossword Puzzle almost every day. Beth met her husband Allan Porter in Albuquerque where they shared their life together for 40 years. Beth and Allan loved German sports cars, their wonderful dogs, The Grateful Dead, skiing, travel, gardening and their circle of exceptional friends and family.
Beth’s unique concept of time, epic culinary creations, quick wit and deep intellect will be missed.
Beth is survived by her loving husband Allan Porter of Albuquerque, brothers Larry Soybel (wife Anne) of Stafford, Virgina, Josh Soybel (wife Trish) of Katy, Texas in addition to many nephews and nieces as well as the many members of the loving Lucero family. Beth is also survived by her and Allan’s many close friends and family, in New Mexico and beyond, who provided incredible support to both Beth and Allan during a very challenging time. Beth was preceded in death by her parents Anita (Croog) Soybel and Erwin Soybel of Albuquerque New Mexico (formerly of Hamden Connecticut). Beth was a devoted daughter to both of her parents, especially in their later years.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Beth’s honor to your local animal rescue organization and/or the New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation.
