Kathrine (Kathy) Ruth Johansen (née Russell), a vibrant soul who danced through life with grace, joy, and a famously sharp tongue, passed away on July 6, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 84. Born in Syracuse, New York, on May 18, 1942, Kathy brought warmth, energy, and an unforgettable spark to every life she touched.
Kathy lived life entirely on her own terms and with an open heart. She was known for her quick wit and straight-shooting honesty—you always knew exactly where you stood with Kathy, and her sharp tongue was matched only by her deep capacity for love. An avid dancer, she never missed a chance to hit the floor, bringing rhythm and vitality to everything she did. Her hands were just as expressive in her garden, where she spent countless hours nurturing beauty. Above all, Kathy poured endless love and devotion into caring for her longtime partner, Ed, and she held a deep, lifelong passion for dogs.
She is survived by her devoted partner, Edward L. Shoaf; her beloved dog, Pepper; her son, Paul Petracca, and his wife, Connie; her sisters, JoAnne McLeary (and husband Don) and Leslie Forlenza (and husband Ernie); as well as a wonderful community of dear friends who will miss her bright spirit. She was preceded in death by her sister, Diane Kelly.
Services are currently being planned and will be determined at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Kathy’s memory to the American Heart Association (www.heart.org).
