Karen was the daughter of Col. Hugh Winter and Vera Mary (Corlett) Winter, who was an officer in the WACs. As a child she traveled extensively throughout Europe with her parents.
She was active in science fiction fandom in the 1970s, traveled extensively and held a Bachelors degree in history. A lifelong liberal and political activist, she had a strong sense of justice and compassion.
Karen is survived by a son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren, and her life partner, Sylvia.
