John J. Schlegel, age 59 passed away Friday, May 12, 2023. John was a graduate of Eastern New Mexico University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Science. John was a member of ASSE (American Society of Safety Engineers) and an active participant in the Region II Ems. John was an exceptional safety instructor. He was certified to instruct for OSHA in confined space, hazardous materials, crane, forklift, backhoe, and so much more. He loved to learn and he also loved to teach. He was instrumental in developing the Emergency Response Plan for the City of Las Cruces, Active Shooter planning and Stop the Bleed Programs at White Sands NASA Complex. John was awarded Instructor of the Year in 2016 for the Water and Wastewater Association of New Mexico. He held an Amateur Radio License, was a member of the Mesilla Valley Radio Club, and the Picacho Gun Club. He was a graduate of the Sonoran Gun Smithing Institute and had many other hobbies including making knives and tomahawks. He was currently learning to tool and work leather. He loved to build things with his hands and he was very talented at it. He was also very passionate about music and drumming was a lifelong hobby. He is survived by his wife Robin Schlegel, his son Jonathan Schlegel, his wife Jamie Schlegel, granddaughter Alice Schlegel, his stepson Brady Crump, his wife Pam, their daughters Charlotte and Saylor, his stepdaughter Amanda Crump and his brothers and sisters Joy Carpenter, Janice Thompson, Erica Letcher, and Carl Schlegel. The family would like to thank Enchanted Sky Hospice for the care and compassion they had and the support they provided.
