Joan McCue, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away in Albuquerque in the early hours of January 22nd , 2025. She was 96 years old and died of old age, in relative comfort and surrounded by love. She did not suffer any pain. The last few days of her life she was surrounded by her New Mexico family, her daughter Barbara and her granddaughter Katie. Mom connected with her New York family by face time or phone. The outpouring of love was a sight to see.
Joan was born in North Hempstead, New York in 1928, she met Ed McCue at Jones Beach and married him in 1949. Between 1951 and 1955 they had 4 children (2 sets of Irish Twins) followed over the years by 19 grandchildren and 31 greatgrandchildren. Their homes were in West Islip and Bay Shore. At their West Islip home their neighbors, the Browns became lifelong friends. There were many backyard BBQs, parties and joint family vacations. Summer activities include taking whatever was for dinner to Cedar Beach after Ed got home from work and later, time spent on their boat at their “spot” in the Great South Bay. They built a screened in porch in their Bay Shore home where they ate their meals, read the newspaper, took naps and enjoyed adult beverages. In the winter they enjoyed fireplace fires that filled the living room with a warm glow. Mom and Dad loved living on Long Island. Joan was also an artist whose paintings are now shared by her extended family.
After Ed passed Mom lived with her daughter Barbara and her husband Michael Walsh. Mom came to live with her son, Matt and wife, Tanya in New Mexico in December of 2021. After she had a debilitating fall at home she moved into an assisted living home in Albuquerque. The staff there were wonderful and loving in the care she received. They often spoke of her New York wit and her bright red lip stick. Joan also had five “Ladies in Waiting” who cared for her. They gave her love and attention 7 days a week until the end of her life. They are Illeana, Rocio, Judelyn, Rosealba and our daughter, Amber Walker. We will be forever grateful for the kindness and love they gave her, even when she was in a bad mood.
The family is having a service in New Mexico on 2/4/25, 3:30pm at the Prince of Peace Church in Albuquerque. Her remains will be brought to Long Island and a Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Church in Bay Shore on 3/1/25, 10:15am. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery on 3/3/25 at 10:30am where she will be buried next to her husband, Ed.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to programs that support people with Autism or any Catholic Charity of your choice.
