Hugh Hollingsworth Pohle, 67, died on December 2, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born on October 9, 1958, in Garden City, New York, he attended Adelphi University and transferred to Virginia Tech.
Hugh worked in the Directed Energy Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland AFB for over 40 years. He made significant contributions to programs involving high power microwaves. Publicly known examples include the Max Power program that sought to detonate improvised explosive devices with microwaves. And the Active Denial System that used microwaves at non-lethal doses to deter hostile crowds. He also designed enhancements for computers, infrastructure and communications systems to resist electronic jamming.
Hugh frequently taught courses on high power microwave effects testing for the government through the Directed Energy Professional Society. He was internationally respected for his ability to run complex laboratory and field tests across government agencies and in support of international coalition partners.
Hugh was affectionately known as Kitten Rabbit by his family. He was an endearing and thoughtful little brother who, from a young age, displayed creative intellect and a generous spirit. He selflessly saved his paper money and bought his younger sister a turquoise ring for her high school graduation. He’d spend countless hours painting miniature metal soldiers and thinking up mischievous pranks to do with his friends. His shyness didn't stop him from having the most amazing friends who gave him unwavering support throughout his battle with cancer.
He is survived and deeply loved by his ex-wife, Frances; two sisters, Martha and Ellen; and nieces Sasha and Camilla.
Hugh's ashes were spread in the mountains that he loved in Albuquerque with the gracious help of the Forest Service.
