It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Doreen Mary Agnes Hanley (Hay) on March 22, 2026. She was born in Northern Ireland on June 13, 1945. Doreen lived an adventurous life, full of love, laughter, compassion, and an endless supply of energy. She filled the world with love, kindness, and happiness.
Doreen’s first adventure began soon after she was born as she crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the Queen Mary with her loving mother. Her childhood was spent in British Columbia, Canada, with her father and mother, Edwin and Mary, and three siblings; Kathleen, Valerie, and Ian. After high school, Doreen moved to Vancouver, BC, to pursue her nursing education. She dedicated the next forty plus years providing exceptional care to patients with her calm, gentle, and reassuring demeaner.
As a young woman, Doreen’s adventurous spirit led her overseas multiple times on journeys to Australia and the United Kingdom. She met the love of her life, Tom, while vacationing in Mazatlán. After this chance encounter, their relationship flourished despite the physical distance between them. On August 13, 1977, they began their life together as husband and wife in Vernon, BC. They soon welcomed their first daughter, Keli, and completed their family with their second daughter, Dianne. As a military spouse, Doreen continued to enjoy traveling and living in various locations. She found work easily in a variety of nursing positions.
Doreen’s greatest joys came from being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She cherished the ones she loved and showered them with hugs and kisses. She welcomed strangers with a warm hug and often a kiss. She made everyone feel special. Doreen enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading, and spending time with loved ones.
Doreen is survived by her loving husband, daughters, son, daughter-in-law, granddaughters, great-grandchildren, sister, brother, many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was welcomed into heaven by her mom, dad, sisters, son, son-in-law, and many other adoring family members and friends.
The family will hold a private gathering after cremation and plan to celebrate Doreen’s life this summer.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the New Mexico Alzheimer’s Association.
