David was born August 9, 1948, in Portsmouth, Virginia to Norris B Smith and Edna (Brown) Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Patty (Patricia Donnelly) of 10 years. David proclaimed his undying love for his wife Patty and said that she brought the best version of himself to which he was incredibly grateful.
He is also survived by his 3 loving children, David Smith Jr., James Smith and wife Missy, and daughter Andrea Gray. 3 grandchildren, Shannon, Landon, and Paxton
Sisters, Ann Simmons and husband Allen, and sister Carol Jenks. Nieces and nephew - Larissa, Alanna, Lisa and Michael as well as several grand nieces and nephews. He his predeceased by his father Norris B Smith, mother Edna (Brown) Smith, and brother Norris B Smith, Jr “Sonny”
David proudly served in the US Air Force, enlisting in 1967 and retiring at the rank of Captain, Chief of Safety and Security, in 1987. He received a Master of Science Degree from Auburn University in 1976 and was a distinguished graduate from officer training school from Lackland Air Force Base in 1977. His military decorations and awards included the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the National Defense Service Medal
Known for his meticulous attention to detail throughout his career as an aeronautical engineer in the US Air Force, as well as his passion for motorcycles working with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation both as an instructor and Program Director. David had a gruff exterior with a warm and gentle heart. He was a man of strong beliefs and convictions.
David’s passions included his time in the military, motorcycles, reading – he was seldom seen without a book in his back pocket, and woodworking – his wood shop brought envy to anyone who saw it (albeit a little messy, he had a place for everything). He was a devoted father and grandfather and shared his passions with his children.
