

Anita M. Romero, a Native of Old Town, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026. Born on September 17, 1930, to Estanislavo Mares and Andrea Martinez. Oldest of 14, attended San Felipe Grade School, Saint Mary's Junior and High Schools, graduated in 1949. Known as the 49'rs, they met for lunch at least three times a year. High school years, she worked as a waitress at La Placita Restaurant in Old Town.
Following graduation, was employed by the Bernalillo County Clerk's Office. Married in January 1951. Became a "stay at home mom" in the 60's, raising her two adopted children, Julian and Maria Lisa. Employed at New Mexico Title Company until 1980, then at Bernalillo County Mental Health Center until retiring in 1994. In the same year, she resumed part-time employment at the North Valley Senior Center until Fall 2013.
Pride and perseverance with a quick wit would describe her jubilant joviality and ambition to do good, work hard, help friends in need, love her family, most of all DANCE and attend LOBO games. A Senior Olympic State Champion and part of Las Miranda's dance troupe. Las Miranda's was quoted by the Journal describing them as "a little fruit and a few nuts"!
Anita was preceded in death by: sister Carmelita Mares, parents Estanislavo and Andrea Mares, Husband Herman Romero, Brother Stanley Mares, sister Carmelita Mares, and life-time partner Ernesto Montano.
Anita is survived by Son and Daughter-in-law Julian and Ruby Romero. Daughter Maria Lisa and son-in-law, Kevin Jones. Cousins and nieces: Celeste, Amy, Raquel, Melissa, and Nephew, Gabriel. Their children, god-children, and loyal life-long friends.
Anita brought grace, great food, and music into the lives of many; loved her family, friends, and neighbors. She will be missed by all she touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held at San Felipe Church in Old Town Albuquerque, NM, on Friday, April 24, 2026. Rosary will begin at 10:30 am followed by Mass at 11:00 am. Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery with a reception to follow.
