Calvin Martin Theiss, age 96, passed away on September 15, 2023, in Austin, Texas. Calvin was born December 15, 1926, to the late Peter Otto and Ella (Martin) Theiss in the family farmhouse outside of Kahoka, Missouri, the oldest of four children. He attended the University of Colorado in Boulder to study electrical engineering, where he met Marjory Ann Cooper, who was to become his wife. Later, Calvin added additional education at MIT in Boston.
Calvin and Ann raised three daughters, mostly in Clarence, New York, and then in Worthington, Ohio, where the first two graduated high school. Their third daughter moved with them to Kansas City, where Calvin eventually retired. Calvin and Ann spent many retirement years in Denver, Colorado, before finally relocating to Austin, Texas.
Calvin's hard work and diligent fiscal management provided the ability for Ann to focus on homemaking and rearing the children. Calvin's intent on serving others extended outside his family to the church and community as well. He served various terms as deacon, trustee, and elder in his church; he was involved in Kiwanis Club; and he served in various offices at Windsor Gardens retirement community in Denver. Throughout his life he gladly assisted his neighbors with handyman chores, even into his 80s. Calvin's participation and contributions in numerous community clubs and interests make a list far too long to include.
Calvin was preceded in death by his wife in 2022, by their infant son Martin Robert Theiss, by his parents, by his brother William Theiss and his wife Mickey, and by his sister Esther and her husband John Truax. He is survived by his sister Carolyn (Jim) Hopkins and by his three daughters, Katharine Alley (David); Virginia (Ginger) Dible (Dan); and Marjory Coffeen (Paul); as well as seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
We are grateful for a long and good life.
Calvin and Ann will be interred in Kahoka, Missouri.
