On Monday the 23rd of February 2026, Patrick Charles Hannigan passed away.
Patrick was born to his father, John Peter Hannigan, and his mother, Eileen Betty Edwards, on the 6th of November, 1956 in Corona Naval Hospital in California. Patrick was one of four sons: John William, Michael Daniel, and Stephen Edwards. He is survived by his wife, Michele Roxanne Hannigan. Patrick and Michele were married in John Knox Presbyterian Church on December 11th, 1981. He is also survived by his son, Daniel Stephen Hannigan.
Patrick’s father was a Navy pilot, whose travels took the family to live in many different places in the United States. Patrick attended a total of 7 different schools, starting with elementary school in Warrington, Pennsylvania. Patrick also lived in Anaheim, Concord, Tustin and finally Livermore California where he graduated from Granda High School in 1974.
After graduation, Patrick enrolled in California State University in Hayward, CA (now East Bay). He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication, with a focus on print journalism. During that time, he began working as Editor in Chief for the Pioneer Times, and at the Daily Review, headquartered in Hayward, CA. This is also about the time Patrick met Michele while working at The Black Kettle restaurant in Danville, CA. Patrick was the head cook and Michele was a waitress. Upon graduation in 1983, he continued writing and editing news stories full-time at the Daily Review for almost a decade. He reported on topics ranging from civil rights, the environment, crime, business and local government. Patrick moved on from reporting the news and pursued a new career in public education as a journalism and English teacher at James Logan High School in Union City, CA.
Patrick’s approach to teaching has left a strong impression on his students, who frequently describe him as a kind and caring individual. He was able to connect with his students and inspire them to write and create in an environment that encouraged them to ask questions and think critically. He is highly regarded as a passionate educator, who truly tried to instill that same passion in everyone around him. Patrick retired from teaching in 2019 after 32 years of service to his community.
Patrick’s interests have ranged wide over his lifetime. Between fishing, camping, brewing beer and cider, archiving historical information, his favorite activities all revolved around music. From his extensive vinyl record collection, to the Fillmore concert posters he painstakingly preserved, seeing musicians perform live was his lifelong passion.
Patrick passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family. He will live on in the memories of his loved ones who were fortunate enough to know and spend time with him.
